Using information poster

The poster shows how data that is transformed into information by a company or organization. The poster shows what sorts of data that companies will receive and what department will use that data to transform it into useful information. Some of data received would be numerical data about how many of the same product has been sold. This data will then be sent to the sales department where they will make a report that will contain the products name and how many have been sold. What they will then do is use the sold information to work out how many are left to work out a wastage ratio.
Information is used by all companies around the world. One of the companies that uses information very well is Sainsbury. This is because the information they use help determine what they should do. Some of the information they would collect would be which product is selling very well as this will help then tell another department that that product needs restocking.
Transformation data into information
When data is collected it has to be transformed into data. This means that what is being collected has to be identified whether it is data or information. It has to be collected, processed and stored. Manipulated, retrieved and presented.
Identified as data or information
When data is being collected it as to be identified as data or information. This would be because data will have to be processed so that it can be turned into information. If it is just information then it wouldn't need to be processed just stored. The difference between data and information is that data is a value that needs to be given as a more usable form which would be the number of things sold. However that needs to be defined as a number of things sold in a day or week or month, also it needs to be with other data values to be considered as information unless its usable on its own. Information is a collection of values together which would show something that then can be used to improve something within the company.
Collection, processed and stored
Data can be collected in many ways. These ways could be by questionnaires, asking another company to collect data for you, buying data off other companies and asking the public in public places.
Once this data is collected it has to be processed it can be processed into qualitative, quantitative, primary and secondary. More about this at the P2 post http://u3ismh.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/good-information.html. Once the data is processed it has to be stored. Some of the places information can be stored is on servers, personal computers and in filing cabinets (hard copy). This stored data can be retrieved by accessing the places it is stored. However the stored data as a hard copy has to be duplicated so that the original isn't affected. On some network systems the data can be retrieved by any computer on the system, unless there is a security level connected to it. Once the data is retrieved it can be used.
Manipulation and presentation
When the data is retrieved or stored it has to manipulated into something for example which could be presented to some managers. When the data is retrieved if it is numeric values for the amount of apples being sold every week then the data can be manipulated into a line graph to show whether the amount being sold is increasing or decreasing. Information can also be manipulated to be more direct or to show comparisons, manipulated to be more graphical or manipulated for use in reports. When data is being manipulated for a report some of it will have to go as it will make the paragraph or sentence it is on more correct rather than showing the whole piece and making it confusing.

There are characteristics of information. Some of these characteristics are qualitative data, quantitative data, primary data and secondary data.
Primary data is data that you have collected yourself. This could be by collecting a few products and going to a shopping centreto ask what product people prefer. This data then can be used to kelp improve the buisness. Most companies do collect primary data.
Secondary data is data that has been collected by someone else. This could be from books, web pages or data that has been bought from another company. However sometimes secondary data can be out of data or not relevent to what you are trying to find out.
Qualitive data is data that can't be measured. This means data that is written or spoken depending on how the data was collected. This would be probably from either questionaires or surveys. However collecting this type data isn't always the best solution for the company as you will get some answers that are not what you are looking for.
Quantitative data is numerical data. You will find that quantitative data can be measured and is mostly used a proven facts. These facts can help prove any specific points that had arised from the situation.
